Omaha 8/b is a limit game and also referred to as a flop game.  The game play is similar to Texas Hold’em but with key differences when it comes to rules.  The players are dealt with four cards.  They must use their two hole cards to play with the three cards on the board to make the highest hand or the best low hand.  To qualify for the low hand, the player must have two hole cards that can play with 3 others on the board, provided that they are below 8 in different ranks.   Players can use two pairs of different hole cards or the same ones to play both high and low hands.

The Game

The action starts to the left of the dealer.  The first player bets a small blind and the one after him or her bets a big blind.  These are called forced bets.  Players are dealt with four cards each.  After that, the first round of betting commences.  The person left of the big blind is the first to act.  Then three community cards are dealt face up which is referred to as the “flop”.  After the flop, another round of betting is done, but this time, the player left of the dealer is the first to act.  A fourth community card is dealt called the “turn”.  Another round of betting follows, then the fifth community card or “river” is dealt.  The final round of betting is done.  Whoever has the highest hand wins half of the pot, and the lowest qualifying hand gets the remaining half.  If there is a tie, the pot is further split into two and players get a quarter.

What is Omaha 8/b?

Omaha 8/b is a variation of the Omaha hold’em.  It’s a community poker game also referred to as the flop game.  Omaha hold’em is similar to the Texas hold’em.  Both of these games require the player to use two of his cards and play them with three others on the board to make the best hand.  Players are dealt with four cards instead of two.  The game was introduced by Robert Turner to Bill Boyd, who held the games at the Golden Nugget Casino.  It’s a limit game that can also be played online.

How to Bet in Omaha

To start the game, players usually place a forced bet called the Blinds.  The pot money will be filled by the small blind and the big blind.  You should remember that these bets are made before the player looks at his hands.  In this case, you don’t have an option but to make a bet.  You can either match the amount inside the pot or you can bet half of what’s inside the pot.  It depends on the poker variant you wish to play.  For instance, in the Poker Limit Omaha (PLO), you can bet as much as the amount in the pot when it is your turn to bet.  While in Limit Omaha, the betting amount is fixed.  So if the limit in a table is $2-4, the minimum bet is $2 and the maximum bet is $4.
