Every poker player who wants to become a champion should start with the basics.  To better understand the game of Omaha, a player should first learn the basic terms used in playing the game.  Most of the players use their own form of vocabulary words that only poker players can understand.  So if you’re planning to play Omaha, you should at least memorize some of the usual terms used in the game.  Basic terms will enhance your understanding of the game, and you will have the opportunity to create tactics of your own because you know the basics of Omaha.

Glossary for Omaha Poker

Here are some of the common terms and definitions used in Omaha Poker:
The board – This is the five community cards in the middle of the table, dealt facing up, that all the players in the game shares.
Double-suited – These are the four cards with one pair of the same suit and the other pair of the same suit also.
Quartered – This usually occurs when a player needs to split the winning pot with the other opponents.  This usually happens when multiple players have the same ranking hands.
Flop – These are the first three community cards dealt after the first round of betting.
Nuts – This is the best possible hand made in one game.  This will decide if the player with the best hand wins the pot.
PLO – The abbreviation for Pot Limit Omaha, which is a variant of Omaha allowing players to bet on the same amount inside the pot.
Scoop – This occurs when a player has both high ranking and low ranking hands giving him the best opportunity to win both pots.
Turn – The fourth community card dealt facing up before the next round of betting occurs.
River – The fifth community card dealt facing up before the last round of betting.
Showdown – This concludes the betting round.  This is the time where the remaining players expose their hands and decides who will win the pot.
Wheel – A straight (A2345) which commonly considered as the lowest hand possible.

Use the Terms Frequently

For beginners, these terms are quite unusual and very hard to understand.  But constant playing of Omaha will help players learn the common terms and apply them along with the basic strategies they learned as beginners.  In time, you will get a hang with these basic terms and not only commit them to memory but also appreciate them by heart.
