The ability to determine the best starting hands is an edge for most Omaha players’ victory. Before playing Omaha, a beginner should understand and learn by heart all the rules, strategies, terminologies and best starting hands if he wants to have a big chance of winning the game. This article will be of help to beginners who want to try Omaha especially those who wants to stay long in the game.

The Big Pairs

The main question for most poker players is what comprises a good starting hand? If you want to learn and win in Omaha, then here are some of the best starting hands in Omaha you should memorize and be on the lookout with especially at the start of every game.

The big pairs are considered as good starting hands in Omaha but not as the primary cards. In Omaha, players are dealt with 4 cards at the start of the game so 4 cards in every player gives him 6 possible starting hands. That also goes with the other opponents holding 6 possible starting hands each. Two aces are big pairs in Omaha but make sure that they are coordinated with the other cards to form the best starting hands to increase a player’s chances of winning.

Flushes

Another starting hand you should be on the look out for are the flushes. These are great starting hands, especially if you have two of them. The Aces and Kings that are available on the table are considered the high flushes of the game. If ever you don’t have it, this means that your opponents have a big chance of making bigger flushes. In times like this, you can either fold or throw your hand away because there is a little chance that you will win the round. Don’t worry there is always a next time!

Drawing Nuts

Since Omaha players are dealt with four cards facing down, it is possible that you will not get the best starting hands all the time. If this happens, you should always consider drawing the nuts or the best possible hand. For instance, you are dealt with a Ks, Qs, 10h and Ah. The flop is a Qh, Jh and 5s. If you combine these cards, then you can make a very strong hand even though you are currently behind another player because of your pair of queens. But if in case a heart will come out in the turn or even in the river, then you will have a nut flush. On the other hand, if a King or a 10 comes out in the river, then you can make a straight. That’s why; there is a big possibility that you can win the pot!

Apart from developing your skills, one of the most important things that a player should always keep in mind is bankroll management. After all, poker revolves around money and lots of it. Every poker player has their own way of managing their money, especially professionals. But there are standard ways in using your bankroll to make sure that you don’t lose any money and get a return investment. There are guides for online players, especially for those who are just starting in the game. Poker bankroll management is basically managing the money you have set aside to play poker.

Keep It Simple

Poker bankroll management doesn’t just involve saving money. Choosing the right one for you also depends on your personality and your playing style. Other players like to keep their stack tight, while others become high rollers. The most common starting point would be 500 big bets in limit cash games and 40 buy-ins at tournaments and no limit cash games. Tournaments usually require buy-ins which is an entry fee to get a seat in the game. This can change though and will depend on what the player is comfortable with then start from their.

Which bankroll personality are you?

There are two different types of bank roll management, and each differs on how the player approaches the game. They both work effectively but will depend on which the player is comfortable with.

The Aggressive Bankroll – 250 big bets or 20 buy-ins in no limit games. The aggressive poker bankroll players are the ones who want to see results in the quickest time possible. If you want to go straight to the top, this is the bankroll management for you. Unfortunately, as we all know, going to the top is not that easy in poker. Losses will have huge impact, and you need a lot of control to keep your bankroll intact. You have the potential to win big but also lose big.

The Conservative Bankroll – 1000 big bets in limits games or 100 buy-ins at no limit games. Naturally, this is the opposite. Conservative poker bankroll players have less variance but steady salaries. Players have a big bankroll, so they don’t have to worry much about losses since they will have little effect overall. Big losses can be compensated. Unlike the aggressive bankroll, small and consistent is the tactic here.

Making your own bankroll management plan will depend on your style of playing.

There are different variations of poker games. Poker professionals find ways to make the game more exciting and challenging for players. One of these variants was introduced by Robert Turner to Bill Boyd. The game was first offered in the Golden Nugget Casino at Las Vegas. Today, it is frequently played online. The game is referred to as Omaha 8/b or Omaha eight or better. It is a variant of the Omaha. The game involves a lot of luck and is much more complicated than your usual poker game. Players can take advantage of different card combination that can turn up during the game.

Limit Game or Flop Game

Omaha 8/b is a limit game and also referred to as a flop game. The game play is similar to Texas Hold’em but with key differences when it comes to rules. The players are dealt with four cards. They must use their two hole cards to play with the three cards on the board to make the highest hand or the best low hand. To qualify for the low hand, the player must have two hole cards that can play with 3 others on the board, provided that they are below 8 in different ranks. Players can use two pairs of different hole cards or the same ones to play both high and low hands.

The Game

The action starts to the left of the dealer. The first player bets a small blind and the one after him or her bets a big blind. These are called forced bets. Players are dealt with four cards each. After that, the first round of betting commences. The person left of the big blind is the first to act. Then three community cards are dealt face up which is referred to as the “flop”. After the flop, another round of betting is done, but this time, the player left of the dealer is the first to act. A fourth community card is dealt called the “turn”. Another round of betting follows, then the fifth community card or “river” is dealt. The final round of betting is done. Whoever has the highest hand wins half of the pot, and the lowest qualifying hand gets the remaining half. If there is a tie, the pot is further split into two and players get a quarter.

Players can use a lot of card combination to make the best five-card hand. The goal is to get half of the pot.

Poker is one of the most famous card games in the casino. The best thing about the game is not just about the money but also the game play. Poker has different variants. Players themselves create different strategies instead of rely on luck and better chances. There are different variants played across the world. The general masses may be familiar with the poker game shown in television. Although this variant seems challenging, there are other more strategic games that are not often seen by the public. One of these is the Omaha 8/b (eight or better).

What is Omaha 8/b?

Omaha 8/b is a variation of the Omaha hold’em. It’s a community poker game also referred to as the flop game. Omaha hold’em is similar to the Texas hold’em. Both of these games require the player to use two of his cards and play them with three others on the board to make the best hand. Players are dealt with four cards instead of two. The game was introduced by Robert Turner to Bill Boyd, who held the games at the Golden Nugget Casino. It’s a limit game that can also be played online.

In Omaha 8/b, two hands can win and split the pot – the high hand and low hand. The player can use two hole cards to play a high hand and another two to play a low hand. To have a low, the board must have three cards with different ranks, 8 or lower. If the player can use any of his two hole cards with the low on the board, he qualifies. The main goal of the game is to get the best high hand or low hand combination with the board to get half of the pot.

Taking Home the Pot

Even though splitting the pot can be seen as a money saver, there are instances when the player can only get a quarter of it. Players can both play a high hand and a low hand. But the player will lose a lot of money when the pot is split because he may end up with only a quarter of it. If you get the best high hand or low hand, you take half of the pot, but if not, you may find yourself splitting with another player due to a tie. There are many card combinations so getting quarters is fairly common. Omaha 8/b is a complex game that involves a lot of luck.

A key to a poker player’s success is having the ability to manage his resources. If you want to play poker, you need to set aside a portion of your monthly or annual income. This portion of money allotted for playing poker is called “Bankroll”.

The Importance of Bankroll Management

Oftentimes, beginners in poker always commit a common mistake that should have been given specific attention to if a player’s purpose is to win, increase his winnings and have a long career in poker. To do this, the first thing you need to consider is the amount of money that you need to set aside from your total income intended for the game of poker. Being able to assess where you stand will provide you ample time to classify where you will play either in a no-limit or in a limit poker game/tournament. This initial step will help in your decision-making especially when you need to drop down or to move your limit up.

Bankroll management does not add to the complication, but this technique somehow offers a sense of salvation from an impending doom (bankruptcy) especially for very impulsive players. Practicing bankroll management will also give you the chance to start again and reclaim all the money you had lost in your first few games.

Types of Bankroll

There are three types of bankroll management you can choose from. It will depend on your preferences and your personality.

The first type is the Conservative Bankroll. This type of bankroll is suited for long-term poker players who are looking for a steady income. Those players who chose the conservative type do not want any change especially in the amount of money they will be earning in every game. The good thing about this type of bankroll is its strong foundation. In short, players with conservative bankrolls don’t need to worry about the impact of the downswing because this will only have little effect on their fund.

The second type is the counterpart of conservative bankroll. This is the aggressive bankroll. This type of bankroll is appropriate for players seeking action, fast success and results. Players using this type of bankroll should always keep in mind that if they’re going to explore all types of poker variants, they should be prepared both mentally and financially. This kind of bankroll may lead to either more winning or, worst, bankruptcy. Experts in poker who know when to say enough can try this type of bankroll.

The third and the most preferred bankroll is the standard bankroll. This type has the best of both worlds. It is the most recommended type especially for beginners. You can win or lose, but it will not leave a large dent on your income.

Omaha 8 or better is a poker game variant often plagued with myths and misconceptions. The game is quite strange. Although it has similarities with Texas Hold’em, it has its own features that differentiate it. At first, playing Omaha seems complicated, but if you play properly, you will find that the game is actually simple. Although there are many card combinations, players can still calculate their odds by paying attention to not just their hands but also their opponent’s. There are also times when players often underestimate or overestimate the value of their cards.

The Connecting Cards

One of the mistakes in Omaha 8/b is when players underestimate the value of connecting cards. Hands such as KQJT are taken for granted by most players. They assume that this hand is weak but is actually the contrary. If a player flops these hands well, it eliminates the possibility of having a low. When there is a no low, the highest hand gets everything. This gives the hand a high value due to its scooping potential. Players shouldn’t just be focusing on winning half of the pot, but getting it all.

The Hands

Hands in Omaha that have the big potential to scoop are those with a two way potential and those that have high potential. High straight cards are optimal because players are rare to get trapped in. Getting quartered can lose you a lot of money. They are easy to get away with from the flop as long as the player has a pair that he can throw if there are any low cards. Players who aim to scoop all of the pot will find these cards valuable. They can be played at any position with a raise.

The key here is to pick the right hole cards to play with. There are no wild cards in Omaha which means that you have to make sure you should play the hand that will most likely get you the nuts. Players should do their best to score not just half of the pot but all of it. Its either you make the highest hand or run the risk of getting quartered with a low hand. Players who flop well with connecting cards will find them valuable. Omaha 8/b is mostly a mathematical game. Play with the right cards and the chances of winning at Omaha will increase. As long as it is done properly, the game will become simple and profitable.

I don’t know if it’s a fact that many people, both beginners and experts, are playing Omaha. Among the variants of poker, besides Texas Holdem, Omaha is the most popular especially when big pot moneys are concerned. Each Omaha player has their own objective for playing the game. Let’s find out what it is.

Exciting and Challenging

Most poker players defines poker has a source of excitement and challenge. Considering Omaha as a complicated game (but I know it isn’t), players will really be faced with challenges to use every strategy they know in order to win the pot. That’s why many players are looking for cool but challenging games to stimulate their senses and have the feeling of invigoration and self-worth. Players who try their luck in Omaha are not only after the money, but they are also seeking consolations especially for people who have a lot of insecurities and dilemmas in their lives. When they are playing Omaha, they somehow escape from the world full of chaos, and by winning in the game, they offer themselves some time for peace and relaxation. Every time a player wins, he becomes proud of his accomplishments and strives more to excel in his chosen craft.

Even though, many players believe that Omaha is a complicated game. In reality, it is not. You can readily understand the game play and the strategies and you will not be required to read a lot of guides in playing poker. If you’re goal is to win in Omaha, you just have to learn by heart all the essential parts of the game and execute them properly. It will take a lot of discipline, wits and determination in order for you to have a greater chance to win the game! If you do this, I am sure that you will never go wrong!

Winning the Pot

Another reason why many poker players play Omaha is the money at stake. Omaha is one of the poker variants offering big amounts of money as compared to other variants like Texas Holdem. Players often try their luck with Omaha because not only does this game allow you to play with a low minimum bet, but it also gives you the chance to win more than what you have placed inside the pot. If a player has a good starting hand, he will probably create the best poker hands and eventually win the pot. The good thing about Omaha is a player can play and win in just a short period of time unlike other variants of poker.

Omaha 8/b is now becoming one of the most common poker variants online. There are now more players discovering this game. Apart from newcomers, there are also veterans who are drawn to it for a different pace. The game seems complicated at first and strange.

About Omaha 8/b

Players also tend to conclude the fact that the game is random. Like all other poker variants, Omaha 8/b is a game of skill. Players can calculate their odds based on what they have, and what they see on the board. To be able to avoid confusing yourself with the prevailing misconceptions of the game, getting the basics is the best way to clear it up.

There are a lot of strategies that can be used in Omaha 8/b. Poker forums and blogs have their own veterans to post their guides and strategies. But before that, the fundamentals should be tackled especially when you’re a newcomer to the game. Omaha 8/b is quite similar to Texas Hold’em but they have their key differences.

The Cards

Before getting yourself confused with reading the cards, make sure you read it right first. Two hole cards are needed to play with three on the board. If there is a spade flush on the board, you need to have two spade hole cards to play with it. You can use different pairs to play the high hand and the low hand or you can one pair to play both. A starting hand of double aces can both play for the high hand and the low hand.

A low only exists when there are three cards with different ranks on the board which are 8 and below. If there aren’t any players compete for the highest hand to scoop all the pot. The best lowest hand is 54321 and the worst is 87654. To be able to read your card easily, read it like a whole number, starting from the highest to lowest then compare it. The card closest to 54, 321 is the winner.

Omaha 8/b is not a random game as other player might conclude. You know how many pairs that you have. By looking at the board, you know if your pairs work or not. By noting the cards your opponents have, you can calculate your odds. If you are confused as to which are your low cards, you can ask the dealer directly for help. These key strategies are simple and help demystify the game.

Poker games involve a lot of math then luck more than we think. Contrary to popular belief, players make the best decisions by calculating odds rather than relying on the best hand to drop into their lap. There are many variations of this card game, but the most misunderstood of them all is Omaha 8/b. At a glance, it seems like a strange game and complicated, too, but if players do the math they will find out that is fairly simple. There isn’t much randomness in Omaha when compared to a Hold’em game. There are some misconceptions in the game that some players need to know.

Is it complicated?

Contrary to first impressions, Omaha is not a complicated game. It’s a simple game that mainly involves doing the math. There are two cards that can pair with the board to make you win or not to make you lose. The outcome is also easy to predict. One player has the best hand, more than one has a good hand, or a bet from a player will scoop the pot from a bluff because no one has any good hands. It all comes down to simple math. Players have to calculate their chances – based on the pair of hands they have and what they on the board – in scooping or winning a part of the pot.

To raise or not?

Another one is never raise with a low. Players should bet aggressively if they have a nut low or anything high. They can manipulate the bet by raising to get three quarters instead of just one. Players can get quartered on the river which may lead to a three way pot. But if you can make a high hand flop because of your raise you will win many chips.

Can I bluff?

Some players think that you can bluff in Omaha. It is true that bluffing is uncommon in the game, but players can still use it. Bluffing can be used on targets that assume it is impossible to do it. There are times when a complete nut hand is not easy to make. Bluffing can be used in this situation against mediocre players. It earns money, no matter how rare you use them, if they are done nicely. In poker games, this can play a role in your return investment. Players can bluff their way in small pots from an early position (poor players tend to bluff from last position).

Omaha 8 or better has been viewed as a rather strange game. It is a variation of the Omaha which is most played online. The game structure of Omaha 8/b is quite the same with Texas Hold’em. They have the same rules but Omaha 8/b has its key differences with Texas Hold’em. As a new player, you may find it complicated and different. There are quite a few stumbling blocks that you will encounter and some misconceptions along the way. Omaha 8/b can be a profitable poker game as long as it is played right. By keeping in mind the key concepts of the game you will find that it’s quite simple.

Two by Three

The first thing to remember is that you use two of the cards you are dealt with to play with three on the board to make the highest hand or best low qualifying hand. Players can use the same two cards to play both high and low. They can also opt to use two different pairs to play a high hand and a low hand. The one with the highest hand wins half of the pot, while the one with the best qualifying low hand wins the other.

Nut Low

The complicated aspect of the games comes in when players qualify for the low. The low hand only happens if the board has three cards 8 and below with three different ranks. Players only qualify for the low if they have two cards 8 or below to play with the three cards on the board. The best low hand is 87654 and the worst is 54321. The player who has the cards closest to 54321 wins. If there is no qualifying low hand, the highest hand wins all the pot.

Do the Math

Contrary to popular belief, Omaha is not random. There are a precise number of cards that can pair with yours which can make you loose or win. By knowing your odds, you can basically calculate your percentage of winning. Keep in mind that there are also other players who have their own set of cards that can match with the board. You can find out the number of possible cards that can make you the win or lose. The likely outcome of your hand is known at the turn.

Omaha 8/b is a profitable game if played right. Low limit Omaha is also much cheaper.
